Searching for universities that do not require IELTS is usually the wrong question. Almost every UK university requires evidence of English, but most accept several forms of it. The practical question is which evidence you already hold.
Other tests universities accept
- PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, accepted very widely for direct entry.
- Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, which do not expire.
- LanguageCert, Oxford ELLT, Duolingo English Test and university-run internal tests, accepted by many but not all institutions. Always check the specific course page.
Medium of instruction letters
If your entire secondary or undergraduate education was taught and examined in English, many universities will accept a signed medium of instruction letter from your school or university instead of a test. This is a common route for students from Nigeria, Ghana, India and Pakistan. The letter should state the language of instruction, the language of assessment and the dates of study.
Qualification-based waivers
Some qualifications carry an automatic exemption at many universities, including GCSE or IGCSE English at grade C or 4 and above, WAEC or NECO English at credit level, certain CBSE and ISC English results, and the IB English courses. Acceptance varies by university and by course.
Where a test is unavoidable
For a visa, universities that are not able to assess English themselves may require a Secure English Language Test. Courses below degree level, and regulated professions such as nursing and medicine, tend to have strict, non-negotiable requirements.
Pre-sessional English
If you are slightly below the required score, a pre-sessional English course of six to twenty weeks is often the fastest fix. You are given a conditional offer, complete the course, and progress into your degree without retaking the external test.

Write down every English qualification you hold, then check the international pages of your three target universities. In most cases you will find you already meet a route, and the search for a university with no requirement at all becomes unnecessary.
