Very few Indian students fund a UK degree from a single source. The usual pattern is a university scholarship against tuition, an education loan for the balance, and family savings for living costs.
University scholarships
Most UK universities run international awards worth roughly 2,000 to 10,000 pounds off tuition. Many are automatic and assessed on your offer grades, so there is no separate form. Others require a short application with a deadline earlier than the course deadline, which is why applying early matters. Some universities also run country specific India awards and alumni discounts of five to ten percent.
National schemes
- Chevening: fully funded one year masters, requiring at least two years of work experience, with applications typically opening in the summer for the following year.
- Commonwealth Scholarships: fully funded masters and PhD places, focused on development impact.
- Subject and trust awards such as Inlaks and Narotam Sekhsaria, which are competitive but substantial.
Education loans
Indian banks and NBFCs lend for overseas study in two broad forms. Secured loans against property or deposits carry lower interest rates and higher limits. Unsecured loans are faster and need no collateral, but rates are higher and limits lower. Compare the total interest over the moratorium and repayment period rather than the headline rate, and check the margin money the lender expects you to contribute.
Using a loan letter as visa evidence
A loan sanction letter can be used as financial evidence for a Student visa if it meets the required conditions: it should be from a recognised financial institution, be dated within the accepted window, be in your name or your parent name with consent, state the amount clearly, and confirm the funds are available to you before travel. Letters that only offer approval in principle are usually rejected. Ask the bank to match the wording expected by the university international office.
A practical sequence
- Apply early so you are considered for automatic scholarships.
- Confirm the scholarship in writing before calculating the loan amount.
- Start the loan process at least two months before you need the CAS.
- Keep bank statements clean for the 28 day maintenance requirement.
