Using FAFSA and US Federal Loans at UK Universities

Dozens of UK universities are approved by the US Department of Education to participate in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. If yours is one of them, you can borrow federal loans for a full degree abroad - the mechanics are close to what you would do at home, with a handful of important differences.

Step 1: check the school code

Search the Federal School Code List for the university before you commit. Only approved institutions can certify your loan. Approval is institution-specific: a university being famous does not mean it is eligible, and eligibility can change year to year.

Step 2: file the FAFSA

File as normal, entering the UK university's federal school code. The FAFSA opens each autumn for the following academic year. Because UK terms usually start in late September, file early rather than waiting for your offer to be confirmed.

Step 3: understand what you can borrow

  • Direct Subsidised and Unsubsidised Loans - available, at the standard annual undergraduate limits, which are frequently below the full cost of a UK degree.
  • Parent PLUS / Grad PLUS - available at eligible schools and often the piece that closes the gap.
  • Pell Grants - not available at foreign institutions.
  • State grants and most institutional US aid - normally not portable.

Step 4: budget for the exchange rate

Your loan is denominated in dollars; your fees are in pounds. The university sets a cost of attendance using an exchange rate fixed at a point in time, and the rate you actually get when funds transfer may differ. Build a 5–10% buffer into your plan, and avoid moving all your money in one transaction.

Step 5: expect a different disbursement rhythm

Funds are usually disbursed in two or three instalments across the academic year and are applied to your tuition account first, with any remainder released to you for living costs. Because UK landlords often want a term's rent up front, ask the international office when the first disbursement actually lands and plan a bridge if needed.

Things that catch people out

  • Foreign schools cannot always process loans as quickly as US schools - start the paperwork the moment you accept an offer.
  • You must remain enrolled at least half time; the UK's "intercalating" or repeat-year arrangements can affect eligibility.
  • Repayment starts on the same US schedule regardless of where you studied, and income-driven repayment still applies if you take a job in the UK.
  • Private US student loans generally require the school to be certified too - check before applying.

Layer other funding on top

Federal loans rarely cover everything. Combine them with university international scholarships (usually merit-based, £2,000–£10,000 a year), external awards such as the Marshall or Fulbright for postgraduates, and term-time work of up to 20 hours a week permitted on the Student visa.
