For a full degree in the UK you will need a Student visa (formerly Tier 4). US citizens have a comparatively straightforward path: no interview in most cases, online biometrics, and a typical decision inside three weeks.
Start with the CAS
You cannot apply until your university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is a reference number, issued after you accept an unconditional offer and usually after you pay a tuition deposit. The CAS is valid for six months, so there is no advantage in chasing it a year early.
What the application asks for
- Your CAS number and course details.
- A valid US passport.
- Evidence of funds: tuition for the first year plus living costs - £1,483 per month in London or £1,136 elsewhere, for up to nine months - held for 28 consecutive days.
- Payment of the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, which covers NHS access for the length of your course.
- Biometrics, usually captured through the UK Immigration: ID Check app.
- A tuberculosis test is not required for applicants resident in the US.
Timing
You can apply up to six months before your course starts, and standard processing is around three weeks, with priority services available. Apply as soon as your CAS lands; September is the busiest period of the year.
Financial evidence: the part that goes wrong
The money must sit in an eligible account for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before you apply, and the closing balance must never dip below the required total during that window. Statements must show the account holder's name, the account number, the date and the currency. If a parent holds the funds, you need proof of relationship plus a letter of consent. US federal loan approval letters are accepted by many caseworkers as part of the evidence - confirm the format with your university's visa team.
What the visa lets you do
- Work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time during vacations (degree level courses).
- Bring dependants only in limited circumstances, generally postgraduate research courses.
- Travel in and out of the UK freely during your studies.
After you graduate: the Graduate Route
Completing a UK bachelor's or master's degree allows you to apply for the Graduate Route, giving you an unsponsored right to work in the UK for a period after graduation. It is applied for from inside the UK before your Student visa expires, and it is one of the strongest practical arguments for a UK degree if you want international work experience.
Practical arrival checklist
Set up your eVisa account, register with a GP, bring your acceptance and visa documents in your carry-on, and open a UK bank account in your first fortnight - most banks will want your university enrolment letter.
