UK offers are grade conditions, not holistic judgements. An admissions tutor reads your transcript looking for one thing: evidence you can handle three years of a single subject at university level. Here is how American qualifications translate.
GPA on its own is rarely enough
Most UK universities want a high school diploma with a strong unweighted GPA - commonly 3.0 to 3.7 depending on selectivity - plus college-level evidence. The diploma alone is treated as roughly equivalent to UK GCSEs rather than A-levels, which is why the second component matters so much.
AP scores are the standard route
Typical patterns you will see on course pages:
- Broadly selective universities: 3 APs at 3–4, including any required subject.
- Highly selective universities: 3 APs at 5, 5, 4 or better.
- Oxford and Cambridge: typically 5 APs at grade 5, plus subject tests or admissions assessments and an interview.
Subject relevance is not optional. Engineering will want Calculus and Physics; Economics almost always wants Calculus; Chemistry wants Chemistry. An extra AP in an unrelated subject does not substitute.
IB and other qualifications
The IB Diploma is well understood and mapped directly - offers are usually stated as a total points score with specified Higher Level grades. A-levels taken at an international school are read at face value. Dual-enrolment college credit is often accepted, particularly in Scotland, but you must ask.
Where SAT and ACT fit
Increasingly, nowhere. A minority of universities list an SAT threshold (commonly around 1290–1400) as an alternative to one AP, and some ask for them alongside APs at the most competitive courses. Many ignore them entirely. Take them if you are also applying to US schools; do not take them purely for the UK without checking a specific course page first.
Scotland is different
Scottish honours degrees run four years with a broader first two years, and entry requirements for US students are often a little more flexible - sometimes accepting a strong diploma plus two APs - because the first year covers ground English universities assume you already have.
Other things that can be required
- Admissions tests - UCAT for medicine, LNAT for some law courses, and Oxbridge subject assessments.
- Portfolios - art, design and architecture.
- Interviews - Oxbridge, medicine, and some competitive courses; often held online for overseas applicants.
- English language - normally waived for US applicants educated in English, but confirm it in writing.
Read the course page, not the university page
Requirements are set by department. Two courses at the same university can differ by a full AP grade. The international admissions page will list "USA" explicitly - that is the line that binds.
