Accepting a Clearing place is step one. If you are applying from outside the UK, the visa chain behind it decides whether you start this year.
The sequence
- Unconditional offer. The university confirms your place once it has seen your certificates and English evidence.
- Tuition deposit. Most universities require a deposit before issuing a CAS. Pay by a method that clears quickly.
- CAS issued. The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is the reference number you need to apply.
- Financial evidence. Maintenance funds normally need to have been held for a set consecutive period before you apply, so start this early rather than after the offer.
- Visa application and biometrics. Book the appointment the moment you have your CAS.
- Decision. Standard processing is around three weeks in most countries, with paid priority services available in many.
If it will not fit
- Ask for late enrolment. Many courses allow arrival up to about two weeks after teaching begins. Get the exact date in writing.
- Ask to defer. A January or next September start is far better than a rushed application that gets refused.
- Consider a January intake course. A large number of UK universities run January starts, which removes all of the August pressure.
Avoidable refusals
- Funds held for too short a period before applying.
- Bank statements missing dates, names or the bank stamp.
- Mismatch between the name on your passport and your qualifications.
- Applying before the CAS is issued.
Clearing works from overseas when you treat the visa timeline as the real deadline and ask the university about late arrival and deferral on the first call.
