The UK remains a leading destination for Nigerian students, helped by short course lengths, English medium teaching and a post study work route. The application itself is straightforward; the parts that need care are qualification mapping and visa funds.
Undergraduate entry routes
- WASSCE or NECO alone: normally not sufficient for direct entry to year one at most universities. It typically leads to an international foundation year.
- Foundation year: one year, then progression into year one. The most common route from Nigeria.
- International year one: where available, this enters you into year two of a three year degree, saving a year.
- A Levels, IB or a completed year at a Nigerian university: can support direct entry to year one at many universities.
Postgraduate entry
A Nigerian bachelors degree is widely accepted for masters entry. As a general guide, second class upper is treated as comparable to a UK 2:1 and second class lower to a UK 2:2, though some universities require a specific CGPA and a few ask for additional work experience. HND holders often need a top up year or a postgraduate diploma first.
English requirements
WAEC or NECO English at credit level is accepted by many universities as evidence of English, particularly at undergraduate level. Where it is not, IELTS, PTE Academic and LanguageCert are the usual options, and a medium of instruction letter may be accepted for graduates.
Costs and funding
Expect international tuition of roughly 12,000 to 25,000 pounds a year plus living costs of about 900 to 1,100 pounds a month outside London. Universities commonly offer automatic international scholarships against tuition, and there are Commonwealth and Chevening routes for postgraduates. Because of exchange rate movement, confirm the sterling figure rather than a naira estimate.
Visa financial evidence
This is where Nigerian applications most often stumble. Funds must sit in a qualifying account for 28 consecutive days without dipping below the required total, and the statement must end no more than 31 days before you apply. Domiciliary accounts, sponsor letters and official loan letters are accepted in specific formats. A tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic is required.
After graduation
The Graduate Route allows you to work in the UK without a sponsor for a fixed period after completing your degree, which is a decisive factor for many Nigerian applicants.
