UCAS deadlines are the same for international applicants as for UK students, but the work around them is not. You have references from a different school system, possibly an English test, and a visa process that only starts once you have a confirmed place.
The dates that matter
- Mid May, the year before entry: UCAS applications open for filling in.
- Early September: UCAS begins accepting completed applications.
- Mid October: deadline for medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and all courses at Oxford and Cambridge. This is absolute.
- Late January: the main equal consideration deadline for most courses.
- Late February: UCAS Extra opens for applicants holding no offers.
- Late June: the final date for applications to go straight to universities rather than into Clearing.
- Early July onwards: Clearing opens.
- Mid August: A level results day, when conditional offers are confirmed.
Confirm exact dates for your cycle on the UCAS website; they shift by a day or two each year.
The international overlay
Work backwards from the January deadline and add these:
- 12 to 15 months before entry: shortlist courses and check the international qualifications page for each university. Requirements for AP, IB, WAEC, CBSE and national diplomas are published there, not in the general prospectus.
- 10 to 12 months before: sit any English test you need. Book early; slots fill in peak season.
- 9 months before: ask your counsellor or teacher for the UCAS reference. Many non UK schools have never written one, so send them the UCAS guidance.
- 8 months before: submit. Earlier than the January deadline is always better, since many universities issue offers on a rolling basis.
- March to May: decide firm and insurance choices.
- June to August: arrange finance evidence, so you can move on the visa immediately.
- Results day onwards: place confirmed, CAS issued, apply for the Student visa.
Why applying in October beats applying in January
Universities read applications as they arrive. Applying in October or November means your file is assessed against a larger pool of remaining places and, on many courses, gets you an earlier decision, which leaves more room for the visa and accommodation steps that only international applicants have to complete.
The visa constraint
You cannot apply for a Student visa until you have accepted an unconditional offer and been issued a CAS. For applicants whose results arrive in August, that compresses the visa window into a few weeks. Have your financial evidence prepared in advance, since maintenance funds usually need to have been held for a set period. Confirm current requirements on the UK government website.
